Hey all...my 55G keeps dropping it's pH from 7 to 6.4...this is after water changes and even adding the powery stuff my LFS guy gave me...within 2-3 days of adding the powery stuff, it's low again...my tinfoil barb has gotten fin rot and can't seem to shake it. What is causing this?

I don't know about powdery stuff. But anything you add to adjust your PH you'll have to readd after water changes. If you're striving for a neutral PH though 'Bulls Eye' which is drops has been recommended to me a few times.

Have you checked your PH coming out of your tap? Where I live we get a lot of rain water and our water supply is river fed so our PH in our tap water changes through out the year (from 5.5 all the way up to 7.5). I spot check the PH of the tap water before water changes pretty regularly and keep fish who can tolerate that range.

As for the fin rot, if you seperate the barb into a QT and treat with Melafix that should help (that cured my betta when he had it). Finrot's usually associated with water quality though so I would make sure to check all your water perameters.

Bouncing the pH up and down will stress the fish and cause disease outbreaks. Is the pH the same in all your tanks?

Most of the pH adjusters are temporary and cause these large swings.

This article should give you a better understanding of how pH works, and possible solutions: Aquarium Chemistry, pH, gH, and kH relationship

In general, it's not a good idea to mess with the pH.

Right, that's why the LFS gave me the powder...it's called pH Increaser and it's made by Jungle. He told me to put in a quarter tsp to start, so I didn't increase too quickly. It worked, and brought it back up to 7, but then dropped again...it won't stay at 7.

The pH in all my other tanks maintain 7...the water in my tap comes out at 7. Can't understand why it drops in only 1 tank. Someone mentioned to me last night that the PVC pipe I put in could have something to do with it...is that right? I didn't think so, but...

Thanks guys!!

Did you test the PH of your water coming out of the tap?

And the easiest way to find out if it's the pipe is to take it out and see what happens.

What other decor and what kind of substrate do you have in that tank?

Are you vacuuming the gravel in the tank regularly?

I doubt it's the PVC causing it, but you could put that in another container with water and test that water to see if the pH is decreasing.

Also, test your tapwater after it has sat out for 24 hours. Sometimes there are gasses in the water from the tap that raise the pH temporarily.

I do a 30% water change about every 2½-3 weeks...it's the way I've always done it, and none of my other tanks are suffering the same fate...there are no new decorations other than some rocks and the PVC pipe I added when I put the lobster in. Those things were all washed in hot hot hot water and then soaked for about 48hrs before I put them in the tank, but even that was about 6-8 weeks ago. All other levels are fine...ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are all 0...I'm stumped!

love to see a good post get spamed X(

But anywho, do you have any driftwood in the tank? i find driftwood to be a good natural buffer for a tank. my 55 gallon has black sand and 30 pounds of coral limestone i used to make caves with and the ph went up alot to about 9.0ish but once i put in my driftwood into the tank the ph dropped to about 7.5-8.0.
