Here is a picture of one of the loaches that either has ick, fungus or some other infection. He's basically staying in that position most of the time, rarely swimming like he used to. He also has been seen scratching himself on the gravel. He also seems to have red areas by the gills. My tank has no ammonia so it can't be ammonia poisoning. I began adding Maracide to the water yesterday. The bottle says add on day 1,3 and 5 so I didn't add any today. Can you tell what the loach has from the picture?

Definately ich like Arky said. Treat with the maracide because that is one of the few medications that does not harm clowns. Also raise your temperature up to 83-84F(gradually), which speeds up the ich's life cycle

Good luck,

Daniel

The bottle says that I should add on days 1,3,5. I added the first dose last night. I'm wondering if the poor clown will die before the treatment ends. I hope not. They really must be sick. When my loaches were well they'd be swimming all over the place. Now all of them stay and hide in 1 leaf that's covered by another leaf. All except this one who stays by himself at the other side of the tank. How long, with me adding medication as the box directs, do you think the ich will last? Also, if by using this medication I kill the ich. Will it be permanently gone and out of the water if I never add any more fish or is it possible for it to come back?

Yes definitely remove the carbon from your filter, otherwise it will remove the medication from your water. Also bump the temp up to 80-82, but do it slowly. The medications don't kill the ick until it's at the free floating stage in the water, the higher temp will make it get to this stage quicker.

I've never used Maracide, so can't give you specifics, just follow the directions on the bottle. Are you supposed to do a water change before adding the next dose of Maracide?

The instructions just say add 12 capfuls on days 1, 3 and 5. But from what I'm reading, it doesn't seem enough, but I am abiding by what they say. The temperature I raised from originally 78 to 81F.

My fish (7 inch Red Devil) caught it when we moved and his case was about as bad as it gets. It was all over him plus I had to wait a day to start treating him for it because I had him in a small tank. I live in New Orleans (a fishtank lovers dream) and down here we have a bunch of local companies that develop different types of fish meds. The one I bought instructed me to treat the water daily for three days and if it was not cured than do a 20% water change and retreat. He got rid of it in 4 days and has been fine since. I know this does not help you but it is the first time in 15 years I was ever able to get rid of ick so I'm kinda proud. Peace.

Ick Journal, Day 4

This morning I did a 20% water change then I added 'Cure Ick' medication, which PetSmart advised I should buy instead of Maracide, as well as a cup of salt. Came home this evening, 2 of the loaches seem to be better (not 100%, but better) and the other 4 have minor improvements. But, the fish ate all the salt that was in the cup! But at least the loaches are getting a little better. BTW... should I add more salt?

This wasn't a part-timer. I wouldn't listen to one of them. This was the manager of the fish department who I've seen there for like 10 years and is a member of the Brooklyn Aquarium Society. But I do take seriously all posts here as well.

Day 6, Part 2

Unfortunately, the fish pictured on the first page just gave up a few minutes ago and died. :( 4 Loaches left. 3 look OK, 1 still has a lot of white spots. Hopefully no more will die.
