My betta has been sick for a couple of months. His fins started fraying, with the parts between the rays melting away. Even some of the rays fell off  Unlike fin rot I have seen before, the deterioration started at the body end, and worked its way outwards.

Of course, as soon as I saw the first signs, I did a large water change and added Melafix. The disease worsened.

Next, I tried AP Anti-Fungus. The disease worsened.

Next, I tried EM tablets (antibiotics), nothing improved.

The betta began to show white patches on his body, so I thought perhaps it was an internal infection, so I treated with Maracyn I and II. It didn't help.

By this time, I figured it was incurable. I had tried every med I have, for both fungal and bacterial infections. I prepared for the eventual death of my betta. Almost all of those meds had cured this type of disease before (on other fish).

Then, a BigAls order arrived with some PimaFix I was planning to have, just in case. So, I started treating, and to my amazement, the betta started improving. The white patches disappeared, and now, a week later, his fins are starting to grow back (some of them were just stumps).

I guess the moral of this story is don't give up, and keep trying to cure your fish :)

Thanks for sharing :) Glad your betta is coming around! Never heard of Pimafix...what is it? (I mean is it like fungal, or just a generic all around med, what form is it in, how expensive is it, who makes it blah blah blah :) )

It's an Aquarium Pharmaceuticals product. It's similar to Melafix, but intended for fungal infections. It's made of an essential oil Pimenta racemosa common name, West Indian bay tree. It's supposedly as gentle as Melafix. I think it costs about $5 or $6 and is available at most LFS or chain pet stores.

There's a page on the essential oils properties (in relation to human medicine) here: http://www.essentialoils.co.za/essential_oils/bay.htm

There is very interesting discussion about it on Dwarf puffers forum:

PimaFix did not work for my gouramis... It sounds like grandmother cure. You can drop tea tree oil instead of Pimafix for that matter.
I see that if anything worked it's already a miracle - so congrats to you. When I worked in Japan and did not know anything about aquariums I suddenly decided to get one. All my mollies immediately got ick (it was ick, I can see now). Lots of them died until I figured to up the temp. I raised it to 78C and all my fish that were not already very ill got cured in a matter of 2-3 days without anything else - no salt no other meds. I call it a miracle.
Recently, I tried to help my gouramis with every possible drug and they died nevertheless...

A lot of times after treatment with a med is over I'll use carbon in a baggie and that takes out a lot of gunk sometimes, just be sure to take it out after awhile when the tank is clear so that the stuff doesn't start going back into your tank.

Thanks for the PimaFix info. A few of my fancy female guppys are getting what I think maybe mouth fungus. Its at the VERY corners of the mouth, two of mine are getting this strand of skin like thing. Its EXTREMELY small and I can't tell well if its string of skin or fungus. I know mouth fungus is actually a bacteria.
Pimafix should treat this right? I plan on using Pimafix but my tank has other fish I must consider, including two corys and one African Frog. I have heard it used successfully with corys, but how about the African dwarf frog? What about snails, especially my 10 -20 pond snails. Their not that important but I don’t want a mass die out with the medication.
