I took balloon fish up on the idea for my 3 gallon. However, I have a few questions about the live plants.

1. What is overgrown or is it just preference?

2. Do I trim them just like a plant in the garden?

I think that is it for now. Thanks ahead of time.

1. In general, it's a preference. If you can't see the fish, or there isn't enough room for them to swim, then it's time for a trim.

2. It depends on the kind/type of plant. If you let us know what plants you have, we can give you info on how to prune them. You can kill plants if you don't trim them the right way.:)

Here are the plants. I took the names off of the packages. The first 2 are already sprouted. The onion is just starting to sprout. And the others havent started yet.

Ophiopogon japonica “Kyoto”
Aglaonema simplex “borneo sword”
Waterlily
Onion
Barclava
Aponogeton

Be warned, all these plants will get too big for a 3g tank! :)

Ophiopogon japonica “Kyoto” -- not a true aquatic plant, it would be better if you plant it in the yard
Aglaonema simplex “borneo sword” -- trim leaves close to the base, gets to 15"
Waterlily -- You can't control its size. You can keep stems from getting too tall by trimming off leaves that go too far towards the surface.
Onion -- you can trim leaves close to the stem, but if you trim the leaves higher, the leaf will die.
Barclava -- (Barclaya longifolia) I have no idea.
Aponogeton -- can't really be trimmed, gets huge.
