Our mother Platy started looking like she was about to give birth for the 3rd time since April 20th. The first 2 times, she had a total of 21 surviving fry. They are all doing very well in other tanks. Today, she started giving birth again but had a couple of stillborns. To make matters worse, she has been acting really strange with her movements and is either dead or very near death. Can anyone tell us what might be happening and what we should do? Only a couple of the fry this time were found alive. We made the mistake of putting it into our smallest tank with our fry from 3 weeks ago. They are still quite tiny but obviously not small enough and one was eaten by another (3-wk. old) baby. Any suggestions?

The mother's movement can be a number of things. But assuming that your water parameters are okay, it could be from old age or her condition after birth. I've read that some platies die after they give birth. And figuring this is the 3rd time, of which the births have been quite large (20 at one time).

What other fish do you keep in the tank. Does she seem like she's under stress? Also how do you get your female to give birth. Breeding net/trap? Letting them just swim about?
