Pleco growing spikes?

Hi all, I have a rather large and rather old pleco. In recent months the tips of his pectorial fins had started to get lighter in color, upon closer inspection I discovered that he is actually growing spikes or spines on the tips of his fins. Is this a normal thing as they age or what?

yea most plecos are kinda thorny.thats why you should not net them,but instead try you scoop them whan they have to be moved.
