The biggest thing with sand is RINSE RINSE RINSE, and then whenever you're working in the tank be sure to turn your filter off because if it does get in there it will shorten the life of your filter.

You can pick it up at places like Lowe's and Home Depot for dirt cheap (bad pun???); I got a back for under $5.00.
I have a 14 gal planted tank that has PFS. Cleaning is not too hard, you just have to be more careful. Debris tends to lie on top of the sand so stirring the water up just above the sand will cause what ever needs to be siphoned out to float up into the hose.
