I discovered yesterday that my molly fish, Oscar, has pop eye in both eyes. Both eyes are swollen and popping out and they are cloudy. I'm really afraid he will go blind or die. I read that he should be removed from the tank (5 gallons) and quarantined. However, I do not have a quarantine tank with a filter and all the necessities. I've been doing regular water changes every day since I noticed. Please help me! Any suggestions? Should I buy medicine? Can fish die from pop eye and how long does Oscar have to live? *SICK*

First things first, go out and buy a hospital tank... This doesn't have to be a big tank, just a small rubber maid plastic one will work. Next, Take him either to a vet, or look up medicine, that's about all I know to do... Sorry about your fish, hope that you can have a cure...

If your fish is alone in the tank, then you can just treat it there. You only need a QT if you have a sick fish with other fish in the same tank. If you need to remove him, you can either get a small tank (check craigslist first for free/cheap ones) or get a five gallon bucket with an airstone. You need the airstone for circulation if you don't have a filter. Just make sure to do water changes at least every other day.

You can try epsom salt; I believe it's 1 tablespoon per five gallons of water. You can just dissolve it into the water. I put it behind the filter cartridge so it would get disolved and spread throughout the tank.

However, from recent experience, I would get some meds. I think pop-eye is either hard to treat or impossible, not sure...so I would go look at Melafix and Maracin (2) and see what those treat/cure.
