Population control for guppies / do guppies suck?

Hi all,

Three questions:

I have a guppy male, and am considering getting a guppy female. I have a pretty heavily planted 20H tank. Am I just asking for trouble? Is the population eventually just going to get out of control? I have several otos and two black skirt tetras.

1. Will the tetras help keep the population down?

2. If not, what fish would keep the population down, and still be a good tankmate for other fish and all my plants?

3. If you think I shouldn't get guppies, what would be a better choice for fish in a planted tank? I'm looking for something small, friendly, colorful, and interesting. The reason I like guppies is they seem curious. What fish have interesting personalities? Cories seem good, but I'll probably get those later. Any other suggestions?

Guppies will come out your ears if you have a well kept aquarium and the male and female get along.

For your planted aquarium, many different fish describe what you are looking for. Cories are a good start. Some others: Neons, Cardinals, Glo-lites (orange neons), Bloodfin tetras, cherry barbs, danios, white clouds, Harliquin rasboras, etc etc etc.

Black skirts may just eat them, but I would avoid females in the tank if you can. There are many places to hide in a planted tank.

I used to keep them in my q-tank, and just stock the nicest males in the planted tank, no worrys then. ;)

Re: Population control for guppies / do guppies su

I received one female guppy with some ghost shrimp.....
after a few weeks I put this fish in a new 37g tank that
I was setting up.....
After a couple days she dropped about 18 babies.......

Anyway.... prior to the guppy incident... I had some
black skirted tetras get a hold of some of my neons.
They have also been know to grab a shrimp or two.

So, no..,. I never did have guppies in a 'heavily planted'
tank.....

Leasoned learned: it only takes one!

Heheh....
my girlfriend temporary place her guppies (1 male 3 females) in my new tank, and now there's at least 11 fry in there.
How long will it take for them to reach a size big enough for me to transfer them?   ::)
