Potassium Permangernate

Hey,
So, I have a snail problem, and I was scouring the internet to find a method of eradicating every egg and snail in the tank. I tried a Zebra Loach but it died, sadly. So, I read an article that has information about Potassium Permangernate (spelling?) dips. It turns out that the company "Jungle" created a water clarifier called "Clear Water" that is just basically PP. In fact, the liquid in the bottle is a magenta-ish color. I was wondering if this stuff will kill the existing snails in my aquarium(s).

Thanks!

Does the bottle say it will kill the snails? I would call the company who packaged "Clear Water" and ask them. I would also want to know what happens to the potassium permanganate after it is in the water - will it dissipate or will the salts remain as a residue. Is this all about your 5.5g tank - I forgot where you started. If it has nothing in it but snails, can't you just clean it out or maybe put a high concentration of salt in it to kill the snails (supposedly) and then clean it out? I was under the impression snails didn't tolerate salt.

I have some of that clear water stuff, and it doesn't say anything about killing snails or other fish, but it turns the water a kind of, uh, unpleasant, color. Yes the bottle also says that the active ingredient is Potassium Permanganate (that is how the bottle says to spell it :p ).

Is this it? This is what I have (just a different picture on the front)

Yes, it kills snails; many people use it to disinfect their aquarium plants. The bottle says, "water may turn dark when first added, but will clear within a few hours"." I suppose that means the PP will dissipate. Also, I'm not sure that salt applies to AQUATIC snails.

I'm with Kerry. And Thyra, I dumped a whole 8 oz package of salt in my aquarium and had really hot water. The meat thermometer said that it was 112F. Those stupid snails still didn't die after a week. I cleaned out my tank and set it up again. Still had snails. I ignored them and 3 months later, as I was looking in my tank, I noticed something was different. My snails were gone!!! XD Now I have 2 Apple snails and I'm definitely adding more!! :D

Salt kills slugs so I thought it might kill snails. Most invertebrates don't tolerate salt from what the packages say, but it probably doesn't kill the eggs.
