Hi all,

I have 6 freshwater tanks but haven't been in the hobby too long (6 months). Someone is selling a SW tank locally. Seems like a really good deal but I don't know much about SW. Apparently it's a 20g, contains a lot of live rock, sea stars and "some crustaceans". He has no filter, no hood, no skimmer etc. And the tank has been running for over a year.

If he/she didn't have any fish would it be possible to run without filters, skimmers etc for a year??

He wants $50 for it.. if I can get past the financial controller at home (aka wife), I'd love to have a marine tank... but not sure if I'm just going to be buying 20g of dirty salty water with some dead rocks and dirt...

Thanks,

Kevin

It could certainly have remained fine for a year even if it had fish in it; more frequent water changes often replace skimmers on smaller tanks. The only real way to tell is to go take a look at it.

I would take a look too... if nothing else, $50 for a 20g isn't too bad assuming it includes the stand. Or, if the live rock is still alive, 20lbs or so is worth $50 itself as well.
