Power Outage and Canister Filters

I have 3 canister filters under my 120 gal. goldfish tank that leaked (yes all of them) when we had a power outage that lasted several hours. Luckily someone was home and they called me and I told them how to close the valves.

What if no one was home? I've already had one disaster this year and really don't want another one. Is this a problem with all canisters? The marineland filters have leaked in the past and I've had to use plumbers tape to seal them. THEY were NOT leaking before the power outage, I know because I have water alarms on all of them.

Anyone know if a power outage is a problem for all canister filters?

I have never heard of it being a problem before - it doesn't make sense for that to be the case. Any time you're turning them off for tank maintenance they would also leak... can't be an intentional trait.

Canister filters should be a sealed little box when the power is out. If you open them, then sure they may leak. Sounds like it must be an error either with the manufacture of the filter or the installation of them somehow.

Where was it leaking from?
