With winter coming up, I'd like to be prepared for a power outage of 5+ hours during snow or just an extremely cold day. I have battery air pumps already, tried and true, but I'm worried about losing heat. I know throwing a blanket over the tank holds in some heat, but when it gets really cold, it won't do much.

Had an idea. Those hand warmer bags you shake and they keep your hands warm in your pockets (camping during October and deer hunting, anyone?). If I put one in a ziplock bag, would it warm my ten gallon nano? Or would it just be too hot or not practical?

These things last all day... they say five hours, but I had a couple that lasted from dawn to dusk.

i don't know how hot those get but if you carefully monitor the tank and remove them if they get to hot i suppose they would be safe. I have heard you can wrap old blankets around the outside of the tank to help retain heat as well...never having dealt with the problem i don't know much more than that
