I am gathering the equipment for my 55 gal tank that I recently purchased. I have a Magnum Pro canister filter and I am really hoping to have a stable water quality to keep some more exotic fish. I have a 30g, 20g, and a 10g hospital tank. I was wondering about powerheads as I have never made too much of a deal about water flow/currents in a tank. Can you have a powerhead without having it hooked up to an undergravel filter or to the canister filter itself? My canister has the biowheel return? Any suggesstions or tips for using powerheads?

The canister will have both a biowheel return and a straight discharge.
The powerhead head can be stand-alone.
The impeller assebly has a basket to keep fish and other things from getting caught up.
You may want to set up the powerhead opposite of the canister intake so it will flow water towards the intake.
This will create a current to assist debri in getting to the filter.
