powerheads are mostly for water movement, and for fish who like stong current. I have mine so the dead spots of water which gets little flow from my filter can get moved here and their. do you absolutly need them no, but I like mine because I like knowing the water is being moved.

what kind of fish are you looking to put in the tank? I also have a ten but no powerhead, i have a 170 on it and it provides plenty of water movement. Most fish that you will be putting in a ten will not need or like a strong current (i could be wrong but i think for the most part thast true)

LOTS OF FISH like a current. Basically any fish that is torpedo shaped likes current. Their bodies are designed to swiftly move through water, or to move through swiftly moving water. RedTail sharks, danios, minnows, SAEs, Hillstream loaches, mostly ALL loaches, and the list goes on.

Powerheads are great undergravel filter systems.. I have used the penguim 1140 with a 29 gallon for years and it keeps the tank humming along nice and clean. Thats all I use too..just the undergravel filter with the one powerhead that is rated at 300 gallons per hour and you need that kind of pull for such a big bottom area to filter... if you have a 50 or 60 gallon get two of them at opposite sides.
