problem with convict

my male convict won't eat...he's also scared of the surface. I think he's not eating because of the fright of the surface. What should I do to resolve this problem?

Never heard of a convict being scared of anything.

the thing is...it won't approach the surface when it does try to it quickly swims back to the ground

is this convict new? ive had the same behavior when i first got mine usually it will go away but if it doesnt try getting some small sinking food

Well it was my cousin's but his tank got overcrowded and so I decided to take it. It's about 3-5 inches i think and I just got it like 3-4 days ago.

What are your water params? A fish new to a tank will react "weird" until it gets used to it.

Just give him time, don't make any sudden movements around your tank to scare him anymore and associate yourself and food with the surface

well I mashed the pellets and he eats it when the pellets go down to the gravel. But one it touches the gravel, he leaves it alone. I'm guessing sinking pellets would help? But what are some good brands? What would you suggest?

Try wetting flakes and dropping them by him. It will probly just take a while for him to adapt.
