The owner of my LFS told me that I should avoid chemicals such as NovAqua and Cycle as they would really make my protein skimmer go crazy. I was curious as to what chemicals are "safe" for the protein skimmer?

I typically use Amquel to dechlorinate my water... is that ok?

Thanks!

Amquel is fine to use...the cycle is crap and if im right in thinkin the novaqua is used to treat water for chlorine it should be fine. In general most additives are fine to use with a skimmer, they do remove some of it but you can still use the stuff.

I'm curious why you would even be adding these things. If you premix your seawater properly they're just a waste of your money.

Well you use RO primarily to get rid of any rubbish that's in your tap water, but generally chlorine/chloramine is not your problem, it's nitrates , silicates et al. Adding a whole load of stuff doesn't do anything for that.
