Is there any use for them in freshwater tanks?

I'm not to sure how they work, or what exactly they do, but from what I read they make the water crystal clear.

Freshwater doesn't generally have the specific gravity and TDS to allow protein skimmers to work.

They'll work to some degree in brackish tanks and tanks like african cichlid biotopes, but they're rarely necessary.

I researched it last night and got the same response... I recently ran into a new larger fish tank, so I'm gona post another thread for some filtration ideas.
