Okay, my moms friend with the 55 gallon had a serious accident. She thought she had aquasafe and she had PH increaser instead and killed all of her fish so im going to try to get her to take the algae eater off my hands. Then id really like to get a Dwarf puffer for my 5.5 gallon to eat all the snails. Could i do that?

I would say no...

The snails aren't really a problem to the tank's health...they are basically just little scavengers eating uneaten food, some algae, etc.

The puffers would rip apart your guppies in a smaller space like a 5.5gal and also would continuously pick at your mystery snail.

Granted some people have success with bigger tanks but I wouldn't really count on it. DP's are really best left in a DP only tank.

I've kept dwarf freshwater puffers in tanks with a variety of fish with no issues. As with the betta fish, I think it depends on the personality of the puffer.

I would not attempt it in a tank as small as a 5 or even 10 gallon tank though. In small spaces, its best to keep them as the only fish.

The puffer's will rip apart your guppies like the man said, it might take them awhile to do so but they will get the job done, as well as them being fed crab's your snail will also be dead in a matter of day's the puffer's should be kept alone in such a small space. Ive had dwarf puffer's for year's so i might know a little about what can and cant be kept with these little guys

Some years ago I had a 20gal with some pea puffs and dwarf platys and they all got along fine, I had plenty of hiding space for them and kept them all well cared for and had no problems. IMO when in doubt do what the experienced dudes say, some people get lucky some don't.

Dude, you should get a new tank. Try craigslist. I got a 30 gallon for $10 and some Tiger Platies. The guy just wanted to get rid of the stuff and loved my tiger fry. So I gave him about 5 and he said that we were even. I love haggling!! I don't kow where you are in NC, but in North Durham, a person is giving away a free 50 gallon and 20 gallon tank. I don't know if they can hold water, but give craigslist a look in the free section. There are some good deals, but you might have to travel a ways.

Dude! I have some tiger platies, and I have no idea where they came from. None of the parents in the tank had stripes at all. Genetics are weird.
