Pump help for new 125

#1
Hi All I have a 125g with a wet dry sy stem
it was orgionally setup for salt but im goign to use it for fresh
anyhoo a friend of mine has a 55 wet dry and his pump went out, so since i wasnt using mine yet i offered it to him
first off is it's loud as heck and it's runnign very hot
can't even keep your hand on it long, maybe this is partly due to he can't have the valve all the way open because it's just too much for his 55, n ot sure who makes it but it was very dirty and smelly and loud and called a little john ?
so im thinking maybe i need to replace it before i get my 125 up and running next month ???
think i shou dl replace it ? if so or even if not replace it
what gph do i look for in a 125g tank ?
any brand names i should look at ?
any and all help is apprecitated as always !!

Many of the wet/dry systems on the back of tanks use Rio pumps.  You can buy them from your LFS or online.  With a 125, you're going to need a big one (Rio 2100 - 3100), so you'll want to ensure it fits in your tank before buying.

Please go with the Mag pumps instead of the RIOs.  RIOs are unreliable compared to other pumps.  Two of my RIOs established a electrical leak in the main tank.  One of them ending up burning the light strip which eventually caused the fire in my stand.
