what would you say is the best breed for a first time owner? i think i have heard it's a poodle since they can be trained easy and dong shed much hair. but i dont know since I know nothing about dogs.lol

He is a German Shepherd, Lab mix.

I had 2 dogs, but the other one (black lab mix) died a few weeks ago. :(

Down here we have no winter. :p So we keep ours outside.

Idk i personally don't like poddles....to....prissy for me :p I want a big man dog :D My Aunt had a mini poodle a while back. I'm not sure there is a great "starter" dog. I've always loved labs because they can really be trained well. Since they are used as hunting dogs. I've also always wanted a full blooded bloodhound. those are cool dogs.

I'm a big dog person though. :)

Ok - I'll bite :)

This is 'my' puppy - Drew Bury-More it's actually my best friend/former roomates... BUT SHE'S MINE!!! :D She loves uncle Andy best of all! He took her swimming for the first time (Damn protective parents insisted on an escort) taught her all the good tricks (Roll over, play dead, "Eat Daddy" - involves chewing on a pant leg) And she still to this day pees on the floor when I come to visit, you don't do that for anyone y'know!

For the record - she's 3/4 Black Lab 1/8 boston terrier 1/8 german shepard. Other than the tail she came out looking like a 6-7month old lab (Pictures about 3 years old she was 2 at the time)

I'm about to get My very own first dog - the wife is arguing for a Smooth Fox terrier - I want an airedale or Welsh terrier...

I have a lab/...... i dunno. Ill have to post a picture of him. He has pretty much the build of a lab. He has a big tail, looks like a labs face, but small feet, and his color is like a smokey brown (not chocolate), he has white bloches on his feet, and a white cresent on his chest. ANd he is about 65lbs. fully grown (so not nearly as big as a lab) he is super calm till i wrile him up, we never knew he could bark till we had him for about 2 months. We rescued him from the pound. He is my lil Chancy

hehehe Pitts are Makaha's trademark, everybodys got em here hehe. im not into cutting the ears, or making them fight, but they offer great protection for my house, and are very friendly if you teach them to be, plus they LOOK like Pitts so nobody even tries to mess with them(plus Kona can clear our 6 foot fence if she feels like it:D). i know they get a bad rap, but i like em... theres something about a dog that can bring down a wild pig;)

beautiful dogs everyone:)

Cichlid Man: my other two are Pitt/German Shepard(lots of dogs gettin lucky in Hawaii;))

Everyone's dogs are so cute. I love Mastiffs, but I live in an apartment so I have a papillon mix named Pasqual. :) I'd send a picture but I am computer incompetent.
Andy I vote for the Airedale- my family had one when I was growing up and she was just wonderful. Protective and smart- I can't say enough good things about that breed.

Airedales are a handful though. I'd be careful with that one.

I like herding dogs...calm, faithful, they go in circles so you don't have to wander through your neighborhood yelling "pookie, come pookie" or whatever.

Well, they are terriers :) the whole lot of them are handfuls. I can see what you are saying Lou, but I think any dog can be a handful, It's just a matter of working with them you know? Herding dogs without something to herd can be an issue too, you just have to learn to deal with the dog with its history in mind. What's your favorite herding dog? I love border collies.
