How do I maintain the bacteria levels in a QT, so it's ready to go if I need it? (NH3,live fish, etc.)

You could either keep the tank up and running with a few fish in it. When the new fish arive, the other go over to another tank. You can then add new ones, or decide which fish move back in the q-tank.

Another option is to get a mini-penguin filter, or I guess any filter would do. Keep it on your main tank. When the new fish go into the q-tank, move that filter over. The bacteria levels should be more than enough, unless your fish load in your q-tank is a lot.

I usually have some choice guppys and algae eaters in the tank. I added 10 Ruby barbs(small ones), and didn't get any ammonia. I use an old saltwater wetdry HOB. *thumbsup2*

I was more or less gearing toward the fishless cycle idea, but how do I know how much NH3 to add and how often? I suppose that would depend on the size of the tank involved so I should just add a little NH3 take readings and monitor them. I guess I answered my own ? What to start with initially for NH3? Never tried the fishless cycle from scratch.

A quarantine tank sounds like a supurb idea. I have had fish simply dissapear over night after observing them acting sick. (folded fins, listless, etc.) I suspect that they must have died in a crack between rocks or been eaten by my pictus cat after dying. Either way, there is no body left to bring back for an exchange and unfortunatly many of the fish I purchase at Petco come home sick. I buy some of them just to rescue them from the idiot that works there. He once told me that my pH (which measured 6.8) was too high and that I was probably doing too many water changes. (I'm keeping egg laying fish and my tap water has a pH of 7.6) I tried to correct him but he just pulled out a pH scale and tried to "explain" pH to me. I just about slapped the little pizza faced moron; instead I grabbed a nearby pencil and paper and taught him about logrithmic scales. Actually I went fast enough that he couldn't possibly have learned anything but I'm sure it made him feel stupid. *sigh* I with people were more like fish.
