It is disabled because I asked Johnny to.
This feature was awesome- it gave one big list that told you who was online and what they were doing- it made pm-chatting a breeze, and made it easy to see where the interesting posts were
. However, it also showed the ip address of every single member online- and I did not like that, nor did Johnny.
He just disabled it to be safe until he can figure out how to remove the IP display.

Think of an IP address as your fingerprint. Every website you visit you leave behind your IP address. It can be used to identify the real you if the person who gets ahold of it is good enough and willing to break a few laws in the process. Even if they aren't that good, they can still potentially cause trouble for you. It's more of a privacy thing more than anything else.
