I've got a Rena Air 100, it is quiet if you restrict the airflow (I can't hear it). I almost took it back to the store due to the racket it was making (I bought it to replace a noisy pump) and then started messing around with a clamp on the airline, hey presto - bliss silence :) (about 50% of the initial throughput).

Maybe this an answer - get a pump with a higher capacity than you need or want and restrict the flow.

I don't know why this worked or whether it is good for the motor in long term.

...the increased noise comes from back pressure so trouthead is onto it by suggesting you overspec

I've asked this question myself and I'll give you the answer which irritated the hell out of me at the time but which has turned out to be the right one......

.....the quietest airpump is the one you never switch on.

I heard the pumps made by Rena are the quietest.

But all I know is, stay away from pumps made by Hagen! Mine's sitting somewhere collecting dust.. had to take it out because it just made too much noise.

Rena 50 - quietest air pump in the world - have to touch them to tell if they're running.

One 50 will only push a one inch stone - so run in series till the required effect is reached. (They're pretty cheap and if you really want quiet.....)
