Quietest filter

What is the queitest filter out there for large tanks? I currently have an aquaclear 110 HOB filter and I can't hear it unless the water level drops below the output level. I'm just curious on other options.

I've have an emperor 400 that is silent as any HOB can be. This filter is over 5 years old, while a two year old Whisper filter became so noisy I don't think the fish could think.

Canister filters are by far the most quite. I have a fluval and two rena XP's and all three are silent unless you put your ear to the motor.

i wanted to add that you can keep a canister under your stand and attach foam to the inside of the doors, it will add to the soundproofing of filtration. but you really shouldn't need to do so if you have a canister since they're so quiet to begin with!

i've got a penguin 350 HOB and it was really noisy when my water levels were low. i did a water change yesterday and topped it off - can hardly hear it now

quitest filter= Canister, and I can only name one because its the only canister I have ever had, an Eheim. The thing is dead silent. I have a HOB on a ten a bio-wheel 170 extremly quitejust gotta keep up on top-offs

What canister filter would you recommend for a 150gallon tank? Are they the kind that has a pickup tube on one side of the tank and an exhaust tube on the other? I'm also concerned about what happens if something fails. What keeps the filter from pumping the tank out into my bedroom floor if it leaks somewhere?

For a 150 maybe a eheim pro, or two. Canisters are the ones with a two bars, one intake and another output bar. If something fails in the canister it would drain it into the canister and still go through the output. If something broke like on the outside of the filer it would drain the tank but thats rare

i would say, cannisters are the quitest, at least in my experiance
