Rainbow Cichlid Question...

Anyone know how to sex them? I'll be picking one up for free next weekend, it's about 3 inches, along with a dojo loach, which might go to a friends if they are still interested. If not, I'm keeping it. They just had first dibs on it, and since I'm going to the coast, will pick them up.

No major differences and hard to tell with singles, but basically the following ways are used -

Size - males are larger and grower quicker from Juv

Colour - Males are more colourful, if I am sexying mine correctly then the males have gained nice Yellow/Blue colouration where as the suspect females have more dull/grey colouring

My female are just as colorful as my male and I havent seen a dull one like you are discribing before. Ive noticed other than size that male male has more finnage and bigger lips. Also the belly is a but rounder on a female. In BVs thread there is some pics of my pair and his.

The males fins go into a point and are longer than the females if im not mistaken.
