Well, after buying the pair a couple weeks ago, the female coloured up again nicely after settling into the tank but the male never did. So I went and bought a second male yesterday and added him to the tank, and she can pic one and hopefully he'll stay coloured up properly.

The boys were arguing while I was taking pictures, unfortunately not in a spot where I could get good pics, but you get the point. Sorry for the dusty glass...it's the side of the tank closest to the wall and it never gets cleaned, lol.

I just want two (male and female) so how do I go about figuring out what they are? At Pets Inc. they're only about 1 inch.

And people say freshwater fish are dull!

What kind of camera is that? I imagine it's digital, but is it like one of the super high grade ones?

Kissyboots, at only 1" I have no idea how you'd sex them, lol. I know they can be difficult to sex even at a larger size; I only was able to sex these ones by watching them in the tank at the store. The original male and female were an obvious pair, plus the female's egg tub was showing slightly. Her tummy is also that rosy pink, but I don't know if that's a reliable way to sex them or not.

Teh females will have a pink belly. No pink belly, no female.

i just picked up a couple GBR's, but they dont look like that. theyre maybe 1in but dont have much color.

They will color up. Should see some changes in a couple of months. Rams aren't long lived so they tend to color up pretty fast.

My female is only about an inch, the males are only slightly larger.

on second look, theyre not even an inch yet. does size matter in regards to coloration? or could it be that they came from the LFS, so theyre not good quality subjects

Good luck on keeping those beuts. I never had rams all of mine killed each other until only the female left.

I've been trying to decide between Apistogrammas (of some form, Borellii or Cacatuoides) and GBRs for my South American themed tank.. Your pictures just sealed the deal on GBRs beautiful fish and beautiful pictures, I just hope I can find as high quality rams!
