I just bought my gilfriend her very first aquarium for her birthday. Its your basic 10 gallon kit with everything heater, filter, lights and hood. We filled it with two kissing gouramis and three black skirt tetras and a bunch of plants. We conditioned the water before putting the fish in using water softener. It's been about three days since she has had them and we discovered today that one of the black skirt tetras is dead. We have no clue why and we dont know what to think. Im going to get her a testing kit to see if the ph is too high and check the nitrate/nitrite levels. Any other ideas?

Just 2 questions...

What "Water Softener" did you use to condition the water? Hopefully something that specifically states on the label that it removes chlorine and chloramine.

Has the tank "cycled" yet? If you don't know then it probably hasn't. Read the beginner stickies for more info. Try this one for the basics http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12326

My guess based on the info you've given is the tank is cycling and Ammonia and/or Nitrite levels are high. You'll need to test for these and do some water changes to get them down since you already have fish in there.

Wow, I entered this thread very late. Removed my own post because I doubt it's necessary anymore. But if you'd like to know what I said, feel free to send me a message. :)
