My g/f wants a cichild tank; she likes electric yellows. What will work in a 29gal or 37gal (same footprint)? I don't keep cichilds so they are new to me. I have 37gal that I might give to her (If I find a 55gal or 75gal that I like) otherwise we are thinking of getting her a 29gal.

In a 29/37 you aren't going to have a very big foot print for teritories. Height isn't going to matter when it comes to this, so there will be no difference other than more water volume = more stable tank.

Yellow Labs are a dwarf mbuna and are pretty peacefull in terms of mbuna. I would say that you could do a species tank easily in there. I'm not so sure that you would be able to do many tankmates with them, but if so they would need to be close to the same size and more important the same temperment as the Labs.

I agree. Electric yellows will do good in that tank. I keep a small colony of 9 in my 29gal. I have them breeding and doing great. A species only tank of yellow labs would be good, though if you or you're g/f feels the need then something like a Bristlenose pleco could work too.

Just provide lots of rockwork and it will be fun watching you're bright yellow labs cruising through the tank. Lots of yellow that will attract attention when you walk in the room. :)

Cool, sounds pretty to me.
In the "electric yellow" thread (I didn't want to highjacket that thread that's why started this one)
http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/showthread.php?t=33476
staitjacket said: that Pseudotropheus socolofi were a good choice for tankmates (paraphasing). So how about a few of these? (for 29g or 37g undecided still). How they hard to find? Size range about the same; labs what 4"+ ?

Other issues: PETsMART has salt & I think cucumbers on the tag for the labs..... (here's my lack of knowledge about cichilds showing Bigtime!) Cichilds perfer some Salt? I have read that lab need a high veggie diet so I get that part of the tag. You'd think the need for salt would have been stuck in my head from some reading someplace.... (personally I wasn't planning on keeping anything but maybe some SA cichilds myself so....)

I don't use salt. Always felt it caused more trouble then its worth....especially for captive bred fish. And always provides that opportunity to screw up the tank.

Cucumbers, yes good stuff. Plecos love them too. Be sure to get the uneaten pieces out asap as they can foul the water.
