I posted earlier about possibly getting a Tropheus Moorii, but with further research doesn't look like such a good idea.

I'd really love to make my 26 gallon bowfront a cichlid tank. I know the size isn't ideal, please let me know if there are any breeds that would work for this size.

Africans are prefered over new world because of high local PH.

I am considering:
Leleupi
German Red aulonocara
Yellow Labidochromis

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, H2O

Shellies would be fine, except that in LFS, all are rather dull-colored. I would like to get some fish with bright, vibrant colors. Are there some shellies that are readily available and reasonably priced that are also colorful?

well if u want color go to malawians, a lot of tanganyikan's are dull color, but have some awesome designs....uhhh lelupi are actually pretty mean fish, its not hard to see the agression in my tank...so i have a 46 bowfront a 29 should be so bad to have like 5 cichlids of any type...except for the larger south americans

Shellies may be dull-colored, but they more than make up for it in personality. I guess occies or stapps would be the most colorfull out of the group. But for striking looks, none of them really fit the bill.

Some of the smaller julies, Alto's, Neolamp's could work as well.

However, if its primarily color your after, then I would look into Lake Malawi cichlids. The peacocks inparticular for starters.

Peacocks are nice fish but i'm not sure i'd put anything bigger than a trio in this tank. And a trio alone. (1 male 2 females). The females are a bit dull but if you get the trio breeding it is quite a show.

I'd possibly look at the yellow labs, i think with their lower aggression level and your size of tank this would be a good move. Not to mention their bright yellow coloring would look great.

Another option mentioned above is the Julidochromis. I personally think these look awesome.

There is always the Brichardi option...or Kribs.
