i don't frequent this part of MFT often, fortunately, but...

we acquired a small calico telescope eye goldfish earlier this week. he looked fine when we first got him, but the next day when i peeked at him he was resting on a fake log. i thought he was dead at first but then he began to swim around a little. now he seems to be swimming much better, but his right eye is turning red - it started out as just a little spot but the spot has quickly gotten bigger.

any ideas what this might be? he's in a 10 gallon tank with another goldfish. i know this is too small for them, hopefully it is only a temporary home while they are still not very large. but please help me out for poor little thomas's sake! :D

thomas seems to be doing even more poorly now... when i just went in to check on him, he was resting on the bottom, and i thought he was dead again.. i tapped on the glass next to where he was resting and he began to swim around. his right eye is now completely red. :(

well this thread doesn't seem to be getting much traffic, but...

thomas's eye is a little less red. sometimes he swims around like he's happy... and other times he's on the bottom barely moving.

i haven't tested the water but i just did a water change, and it really seems to be in pretty good condition. i mean, not that i can *see* nitrates, but there are no red flags like cloudy water or lots of gunk coming up when i vacuum the gravel.

i'm out of my nitrate test strips, i need to go get some more.

any ideas?
