my red tail just died.... he was an aiming expert as i was cleaning filter, he found the 1/2 inch opening and fit right in there, but couldn't get out when i turned the filter back on... i have many loaches who are also escape artists so i have a covered tank, no openings except the exact fit of my cover. Just switched to glass cover so it is nice looking now.

I can't say any of the red-tails that I have ever had have ever jumped out of the tank. Mine are always covered, but even when I'm cleaning they usually retreat into their hidey-holes in the fake driftwood.

My red-tail that I've had for about 2 months now is almost 4" long... he's gotten very large so quickly, I don't worry too much about him getting in to mischief.

i had a red tailed black shark about a year and a half ago. i had to treat the fish and clean the tank so i put the fish in a different tank and cleaned the other one. the tank with the fish (new tank) had no lid so i put a tray on top but there was a hole for the airhose and filter wires....etc... i went upstairs and came back down, checked on the fish, no shark , looked around the tank, no shark, checked the dogs mouth, no shark, then i hears a sort of wet flapping noise and looked at my foot and saw him. he was 5-6" and he fitted through the hole. i didn't know how long he had been on the floor so i scooped him up with my hand and put him back. i learnt a lesson. always have a lid.

did he/she live. they have a tendancy to do that.

also be warned. when they get older they get very very agressive. mine killed all of the fish in my tank so i gave it to my sister who had much bigger fish. lol hes still alive and behaving. he must be in behavior school. *crazysmil *crazysmil lol
