My gourami looks pretty bad. He has red "ulcers" on him. I don't see any parasites. BUT he does seem kinda twitchy. I think because he's irritated. I'm treating with bacterial medication and I cleaned the tank. Am I on the right track? ADVICE/HELP!?!?!

yes - you're on the right track - but.......a lot of the time a fish that has been weakened by a bacterial infection often picks up a secondary fungal infection.

A lot of bacterial meds account for this by being dual-purpose. If the one you are using isn't then keep your eyes open for any fungal complications and have a med ready.

While we're here - http://www.myfishtank.net/diseasedatabase.php may help to identify

The problem I've got recommending brand name meds is that I'm in the UK - and your the other side of the pond. I don't know what meds you have to choose from.

If I had that in my tank, I'd use a med call Hexamita - by eSHa. The stuff treats for internal and external parasites, body fungus, hole-in-the-head, velvet, and a few bacterial things too. It's not expensive, and works pretty quickly, and if you're not sure what's wrong with a fish it's a bit of a cure-all.

If the Hexamita didn't work within a week, I'd do a 50% water change to dillute that med, and treat with a hard dose of another anti-bacterial med - just looked in my med box - and my purely anti-bac med is made by a company called "King British" - so not much help there - but I've heard good things about Jungle Labs stuff, which is more common over your way.

Go for the Hexamita if you can get hold of it - strong stuff - and usefull to have on hand for the future - especially for new arrivals
