I'm looking at my tank, and right now my male red zebra is doing the mating dance with my female kenyi, he's doing his thing all over the eggs she's deploying and than she's scooping em up in her mouth. Is it possible for them to cross breed? or are they simply following a routine? I have a male kenyi in the tank, but the zebra definitely has dominance, and right now, he's displaying it with the female. I've never seen it before myself, but they are both swimming in small circles over some rock, and she's following his egg spots on his tail, she'll tremble and a few eggs come out, than the male passes over them, and she scoops them up, than she mouths at this tail a bunch, and they repeat.

Are there any female red zebras in the tank? If not, that might explain the actions of your male red zebra. Without females of its own species, a male mbuna is apt to breed with any willing female in the tank (which subsequently results produces hybrid fry).

no, my red zebra came with the tank, along with a male cobalt blue zebra, I've been trying to get my LFS to get females in, but so far they just keep getting batches full of males. The tank has 2 female kenyi, 1 male kenyi, 1 female peacock, 1 male cobalt blue zebra, and one male red zebra that has since been moved to my 15 gallon until I can return him(he's just been aggressive since I got him, and after mating, he is just unbearable)
