Reducing noise of the BIO-Wheel flow

Hi,

I got my first fish tank ever on Sunday and have been running in since then to get it ready for fish.

I am running a 125 BIO-Wheel filter. And it is kinda annoying. I have the tank in my bed room due to the large rowdy dogs and curious cat that live in the rest of the house. Anyway, because it is in my room, I have to sleep with it there and I am finding it really hard to sleep with the loud flowing water.

Is it ok to put a towel over the tank to reduce the noise? Or does it need air flow around the filter?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.:)

You will want to make sure the water level is to the maximum.
This will quiet the noise of the returning water.
Also, if the spray bar is adjustable you might want to fiddle with the angle the water is spraying onto the bio-wheel.
A slightly different angle might quiet the spray.

I find with my penguin bio wheel 150s that i have if i keep water level to top of tank that i hear no noise from return water only noise of filter working. I would say after about a month you will get used to the sound and actually miss it when it isn't around. I know i am use to in th dinning room if it is turned off the house sounds too quiet.

I dont believe the 125 bio wheels have a spray bar, I believe the emporers do. I have the 125 it runs from the water flow. once the wheel get cultured it starts to slow a little.

You are correct.

It's interesting to note that the Emperor bio-wheel does utilize both the spray bar and return flow.

One question on the emporer, I have thought about buying a one, but I dont want to have to buy a 4th type of pad. I have the dual bio wheel I think it called the 330, the 125 and the mini....do the emporers use the same pad as the 330?

Thanks for the quick responses.

I will add some more water I suppose. I was talking to my fish store friend and she said it is good to keep it a bit lower because it causes a larger water circle cycle. (if that makes sense, I am probably not explaining it properly)

Anyway, I will add some more and hopefully it will get better with time.

Thanks!

I don't know what size the 330 pads are.
The Emperor are 9 1/2 x 6 inches.

Last Saturday I went to the craft store (Hobby Lobby) and bought some batting/floss.
The package contains 1 roll of polyster batting for $4.35.
I plan to cut out the pad sizes and use the Emperor media frame.
I am estimating the $4.35 package will create 35-45 pads from 45"x60" (2700sq in) and save TONS of $$$.
Emperor cartridges run $8.99 for a 4 pack or $25.99 for a 12 pack on Drs. Foster Smith.

DIY filter cartridges are the way to go from now on for me.
