Does anyone have information on these new Rena Products? I have seen some SmartHeater pics on the internet, but no info for it, or pics and info for the SmartFilter...

This has been driving me bananas the past few weeks. I see these things at PetsMart, and nowhere else. I can't get any information on them - not even on Rena's website!!! And I surely can't find a better price online so that if I do decide to by one I can get it on the cheap from PetsMart's price mach guarantee.

Plus I am too much of a wimp to be the first one to try something. I like to know if it's worth the money by hearing others' experiences with it.

I have one. A couple weeks ago I started up a new 55. Had a Fluval cannister in my cart and saw this filter. Decided to spend the $80 and try it out. The design is nice. 3 individual cartriges that have 4 sides of carbon (says it's Bio-Chem Zorb and better than AC is it really though?) and mechanical filtering. The cartriges have a top and bottom that lock to keep water from bypassing. The water is pumped up from the bottom through the carts not over. It seems like it would be easy to take one of the carts and replace the carbon with something else if you needed it. Next to the 3 carts is a media tower that 12 Bio-Chem stars slid into. You can easily remove the tower with all the stars on it when cleaning the filter. 10 of them are said to support 50 gallons and this one has 12. Seems better than a sponge in other HOB filters to me.

I haven't seen the smart heater though. If it really attaches to the intake and does a kind of inline heating that would be great. I'll have to look for them next time I'm at Petco.

My tank is crystal clear and water quality is great so far I'm happy with it.

While on the topic of Rena Smartfilters.....
I have the Rena Smartfilter 55. I'm using it for two red eared slider turtles that I keep in a 40 gallon tank. It seems like most people that use this website are fish owners, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway. Anyway, the filter works great, the only problem is the sound of the water dropping back into the tank is driving me crazy! I need to leave the water level in the tank about 2 inches below the top of the tank so that the turtles can get on their basking dock, so simply raising the water level isn't an option. The only thing I can think of is to attach some sort of slide so that the water isn't dropping, but I don't know what to make it out of or how to attach it. If you have any ideas please respond! Thanks!

here's a link for the Rena SmartHeater

I also just got the Rena SmartFilter for a new 10g planted I set up this week and it works great so far. The four-sided cart and bio stars are great mechanical and biological filtration. The dosing port and flow control knob are handy as well. Hopefully my XP3 will work as well when I get my 50g set up! *thumbsups

I wish I could recommend the Smartfilters...it's the best design I've seen for a hang on design. BUT...mine failed after 45 days.

I called their "customer service"...they told me to box it up and ship it back for repair (at my cost for shipping both ways). I asked if I do an advanced replacement since I can't really go for a couple of weeks without my filter.

The guy on the phone got really short with me and told me that they "weren't about to ship out an expensive piece of equipment like that". I Offered to secure it with a credit card or to just buy a new motor. he said they weren't set up for that.

I pointed out that a filter is kind of important and he told me that if it was so important than I should own a spare...I'm not kidding here folks...this is the attitude of their service team.

for the most part this is a great hobby with a lot of great manufacturers. I couldn't believe that this is how Rena supports their equipment. This isn't a clock radio or CD player. I have LIVE animals counting on the consistent performance of their gear and they tell me I'll be without for a couple of weeks at my own expense.

Sorry guys...it's a really cool design, but there are plenty of other filter makers out there that care a lot more about their customers
