I have major riptides in my tank !!!

I have just set up a 4-foot, 75 gallon tank, Eheim 2026 filter.  The spraybar from the filter is at the back of the tank on one side, and the long airstone takes up most of the back of the other side - this seems to have started major currents in the tank.  The filter and the air-pump are set to their minimum.

Do currents harm the fish in any way? The tank is currently planted, but no fish yet, still cycling - I intend keeping the smaller species such as Platies and various Tetras.

Any comments on currents in your tank?

No riptides don't directly hurt the fish, but most fish like to get out of a current and rest. However with a strong tide they would not be able to and this could lead to health promblems. You need to move the airstone around so that there are no riptides. Otherwise all your fish will swim at the bottom and hide in the plants.

And really tiny weak fish, or long finned slow swimmers might get sucked around and battered to death in a really strong current. Suckerfish like strong currents though, that's why they've developed suckers. Sounds like a perfect chinese algae eater home to me<G>.
