Best way if you want to reduce your hardness is to mix it with "tap water purifier water", R/o water or some used collected rainwater(what is in yours though?).

You can also use peat in large trashcans pumped back through the peat over and over but it leaves a tint you may not want.

P.s.-- mine is also very hard, works fine for my fish and plants.

I wish I could afford an RO unit!!!   This will be the bigest task!  Im making a discus tank...so its gotta get soft!  Do any of the "discus buffers" help?  I hate adding to many chemicals...but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.  Im getting a shipment of live plants tuesday...maybe those will help some.

tap water purifier all the way. they are only like 40 bucks max. quicker cheaper and way more efficient than a RO unit. i wouldnt do any  chemicals, they always backfire and lead to other probs. hope i could  help.  ;D

no need to drain. do a 50% water change and replace with all tap water purifier water. should bring everything to a resemblence to discus water. all tap water purifer water has no nutrients
