Looks like scoria (vesicular basalt), it should be fine in a freshwater tank. You might keep an eye out for any particularly sharp edges, but once it is sterilized it will be no problem--after all, it's what oceanic crust is made of :)

Thank dss2004 and SoleilReine's reply.
The pumice rock(lava rock) and scoria rock pictures I found from internet do not look like the rock I have.

Any ideas?

Thanks

What about your rock looks different from what you found on the internet?

This rock is not a pumice stone--pumice is essentially volcanic "froth" and is usually gray in color. (Edit: You'd know if it was pumice, you'd put it in your tank and it would stay at the top :) )

Not all rocks of the same type look exactly the same, either. Scoria is a pretty flexible category, some scoria rocks have more holes (indicating a higher gas content), or are a darker/lighter color (more or less Fe/Mg content).
