I'd like to add some more rocks to my tank and aren't sure if I should use some I take out of the woods, streams, etc.??? I don't want to bring any foreign bacteria, substances, etc. into my tank. Is there anything I should do to cleanse the rocks? Or maybe I should just go spend a ton and buy some to be safe?

thanks!

PS- I searched and only found a thread talking about making synthetic rocks. ;)

Firstly, you want to test that your rocks are suitable for a tank. Some rocks will breakdown in a tank and dramatically rise pH. Add a drop of vinegar to a rock, and if you see any fizzing reaction, discard that rock.

Once you have determined that the rock is safe for your tank, you should to scrub it down (no detergent) and boil it in water to sterilise it. Allow to cool and add to tank.

Thanks trouthead!

I tested them with standard household white vinegar, and none of them fizzed. So I should just be able to boil them and be good to go?

I appreciate the input! *celebrate
