Wow! I havent had any sort of disease for I don't even know how long, but here is what is happening and what I have done so far....
The "king" of my tanks, my RTS (3 yrs old...and has seen me through newbie cycling - an hour long move in the dead of winter - and the move from a 25 gallon to a 55 gallon, seems to have pop eye :(.
Tonight I was noticing that one of his eyes seemed glassy and opaque, so I freaked out. This little dude has seem me through everything - he was like one of my first fish I owned since I started keeping aquariums!
I am not big on medicine, and don't have any on hand right now, so here is what I did. I didn't want to treat the whole 55 gallon community tank that is thriving (albeit the RTS) so I did this:
The tank he is in (55 gallon) is at a temp of 78 degrees. I am hoping that heat plus salt will help him through this. So I took out my betta from my 5 gallon 80 degree tank, placed him (betta) in a ziplock bag (with water), floated him in the 55 gallon to acclimate him, took like 1/2 hr trying to catch the RTS, released the betta into a floating breeder tank in the 55 gallon, placed the RTS in a ziplock bag, floated him in the 80 degree 5 gallon, added marine salt (1/2 tablespoon for a five gallon tank) and released him into the 5 gallon. I have tried taking pics of him but all I have at home is my crappy 1.3 MP webcam :(
My question is, he has turned all white on his eyesocket and the very tips of his fins, and his mouth/snout.
Is this an ok action to take? I dont have any of the "tonic" aquarium salt, just marine salt for my 25 gallon brackish tank. I only added 1/2 the amount for a "tonic" (from what I understand is 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons...I added 1/2 tablespoon) and his little body seems to be reacting to it as his "injured" parts are turning white. I don't mean to be gross, but you know when you soak your feet in epson salt and parts turn white, and you know it is becasue they are being "healed" by the salt? Is this the same thing happening to my RTS right now? He acts ok, although he is in a completly different tank, he is is the same ph as the other, even cleaner water, and has a low dose of marine salt. I'm just worried that marine salt has a different effect than aquarium salt and he is actually "stinging" all over :(

I would say he is reacting to the salt. Is he showing any other signs of stress? The salt may also be causing him to thicken or shed his slime coat.

I would say the initial eye problem is due to an injury. His eye may get better, or may not. If it doesn't he will probably be quite happy with one eye.

His behavior seems fine, he is curious, isn't sticking to one area of the tank, and has eaten a little, I'm just worried about his parts that are turning white. And that he isn't able to deal with the salt (as it is marine salt and not aquarium/tonic salt). Should I leave him in there overnight? Or do you think that this little expedition has served as a mild salt bath and he is ready to go back to his 55 gallon home? I just think the world of the little guy, he is a trooper :)

He seems much better this morning, his "white" areas aren't as pronounced and his eye, believe it or not, looks quite normal again! In fact, his colors overall look vibrant. I did a water change to dilute the salt even more, and am going to leave him in there until tonight. Then I'll acclimate him slowly back to the big tank. (I bet the betta can't wait, he look really annoyed at having to be in the little cube :) )
Thanks, Lotus, for the shoulder to lean on :D

I moved him back to his 55 gallon home, he seems ok now. A bit disoriented when he got back in but I just fed them all and he is gobbling the frozen bloodworms like a little trooper.
I'm glad this little experiment worked, now I know I can use the 5 gallon as a temporary "quarentine" tank for illnesses that can be treated with heat and salt :) And also glad that marine salt can be used as a tonic as well....
