I bought a rubber lip pleco today based on the advice I received here. I went to planetcatfish.com to get some info on him and they do not have him listed. Anyone know where I can get some "official" info on the guy. I don't think he is the same thing as a rubber NOSE pleco. He's already attacking the brown algae. Thanks.

I went and had a look on planetcatfish too. As far as I can tell, the rubber-lipped is the same as a rubbernose, which is the same as a bulldog pl*co. The species name I came up with was Chaetostoma cf. thomsoni. An alternate was Chaetostoma milesi. Maybe you can go and ID him for sure from there. I know that site can be overwhelming when you don't really know what you're looking for (who ever knew there were that many catfish!).

I don't have one, so I can't really tell you anything. At least he's enjoying the brown agae :)

Actually, I think I have determined that it is a striped rubbernose. The color and max length all fit as well as the diet. The bulldog pleco looks to be about 6-8 inches long. The striped rubbernose is also called the striped bulldog pleco, so you were at least close. If he get to 8 inches we'll know you were right on! Thanks.

Just to confuse matters, there seemed to be several different types of bulldog pleco listed. I am glad you managed to ID him. Of course, the fish stores don't always label their fish correctly. I saw a gold nugget pleco, labeled as a roya pleco, and julii cories labeled as spotted cories.

As long as he eats the algae, acts nicely in the tank and doesn't get to big, I am sure you'll be happy with him. :)

True, but I'm sure you'll agree that part of the fun of fishkeeping is knowing what you've got and learning something about them. The lfs should ID a little more responsibly. I'm also having trouble finding what was sold to me as a skunk cory. On planetcatfish, there are only about 1000 in the family for me to go through. I'd be really ticked off if I didn't enjoy it so darn much!
