I wasnt sure what catagory to put this in but...

I have my riccia tied onto mesh i had cut out from a mesh bin and its now in my tank.

Its rusting at the edges where the bare metal is exsposed and i was wondering if the rush will affect the tank ?

Thanks..

Well, I'll take a stab at this one...Yes I think the rust will be bad news for the tank, Is it possible to switch it out for some plastic "mesh"? My wife uses plastic mesh in her Hermit Crab tanks, they love it for climbing and you can get it in a bunch of different colors (We got ours at the local craft shop), Just a thought....:p

Rust is actually the oxidation of iron.
As the rust corrodes is iron being released into the water?
If this is the case, perhaps dosing Flourish Iron is not needed.
It's worth a thought isn't it?

Is the this process harmful to fish?
I don't know.
But here's an interesting find:
.....Many fisherman believe that
.....it is important for a hook to
.....rust so that it falls out of the
.....fish’s mouth before it harms
.....the fish; however, studies
.....actually appear to indicate
.....that it is the toxins in the
.....rust and corrosion itself that
.....is harmful to fish.

Thanks for finding that out GIS Guy, it does sound partly right, and i am worried about the rust buts its only a few small patches so i suppose ill leave it for now. i think if it was full of rust maybe alot of toxins would be released.

I did wonder wether the iron i am dosing has cause the rust in some ways. . .

Anyways thanks for the comments :)
