True story:
An ex of mine had this terrible friend that we have taken to calling Debbie Downer (even though her name is Kate.) So she was telling this story about her friend who received a goldfish as a gift from a boyfriend before he dumped her and left her with a fish to take care of. (Oh how awful! Pets are so awful...)
Anyway, Kate said, "I would have flushed that ****."
To which I interjected angrily, and was met with, "It doesn't matter, fish don't have souls."
Sigh...belief can make people think so many things. One will dictate that all living things deserve the utmost respect, and another will dictate that only humans have "souls."
Not to enter spirituality into anything, but I just feel that to assume any one thing is higher than another, or something lacks a "soul" is sort of like playing "supreme being" when you are not.
But regardless of the spiritual aspect of it all, we do know that living things feel pain, terror, etc. So the idea of flushing a living creature down the toilet seems to me, almost antisocial psychotic behavior. I would keep my distance from anyone who can do such things.
