Is this a Siamese Algae Eater? Since there is confusion of the photo in the profile, I thought I should ask. My LFS and I think they are, but what do we know? ;) Thanks!

just wanted to add that the one in your pictures is a young SAE. as it gets older it will tend to look more like the CAE (losing it barbs and the black in the tail). it also gets a yellowish color in the fins.

Thanks for the quick reply. The photos were taken with a nikon coolpix 995 digital camera, and I used photoshop to adjust the brightness and the contrast of the photo. I should've cleaned the glass of my aquarium before shooting... oh well. If the webmaster wants to use any of the photographs to update the fish profile, I give him permission. The third one (sae3.jpg) is my favourite. (photo credit would be nice, but not neccessary.)

This is definately the real deal. I have 2 of these guys and they are beautiful fish that seem to swim in harmony as they keep the back glass of my tank clean. I highly reccomend them for both their beauty and their appetite for algae. But, there are many fish that look a lot like them, including the CAE, and you have to know what to look for ie... black jagged stripe that runs all the way to the fork in the tail, clear fins and the black markings on their back...

Yep, I also agree that it's the real deal.
The false SAE has yellowish fins, darker belly, and the black stripe does not go through the tail fin. The head also looks slightly different. I don't know how to describe it, but when you compare the two for long enough, you just kind of 'see' it

Yeah I also find it rather difficult when trying to determine if it is a true sae or a cae or flying fox or whatnot. I think I have a false sae. He still does a good job of cleaning my tank. Sometimes during feeding time, if I am feeding my fish frozen brine shrimp my sae will "go nuts" and start chasing after anything else smaller than him in the tank. He doesnt do any harm but he takes a hyper fit for a moment then calms down again. It's really quite funny to watch.

those suckers are so hard to find in my area and every petshop i goto say they're sae when they're not and i try to tell them wrong, only place i have found info on comparing them is at thekrib.com but thos pics are sketches and i think it would be easier to ID if they were actual pics... anyone know of any other sites about them?
