SAILFIN GIBBICEP

#1
Hi guys,

i use to have a sail fin gibbicep. I know they stopped the importation of these fine fish into australia , however some breeders still had stock that bred readily and keeped the fish on the shelves. Now i have noticed that the name has changed ( sorry i never remembered any of the names-old age i think )

any comments, would be appricated.

MINE- i brought it for 70 bucks aussie dollar at an inch long.

he grow to 13- 14 in approx.

I used to move him around australia with me on posting in a eski ( cooler ) as hand baggage ( i wuved that cattie) any way i had him for 14 or 15 yrs before he went to meet his maker ( 2002).

every one loved him actually, when i had dramas taking him with me at that time, people took care of him ( non fish people ) and when i got set up they would fly him to me.

his resting place is in a freezer in a place called Puckapunyal ( aboriginal for valley of the winds if i remember correctly ) long story as to why he is still in a freezer. i did see him in march this year, all wrapped up in plastic, strange to see him in -4c and not his normal 27c warm tank. sniff sniff poor little fella.

Cheers

Your marine fish might be cheap but 70 AUSD for a gibbiceps is outrageous!! 5 dollar or 3 quid fish.

I've seen a few now that are 2 feet long.

I'm not surprised they stopped importing them to oz as they seem to be a top quality pest species. If you look in lots of ditches or bits of water round Kuala Lumpur for example there are some nice populations of common plecs and gibbies that are from pet escapes.

Algae eating becomes a threat when there's none left for native species to eat. Next thing you know there's nothing left in there cept Gibbys

Got a sailfin myself - big fella - we call him Elvis - still widely available over here as the cold would kill them off if they got out

LOL, my god i dont believe i didnt think of that (slapping forehead ).i hate when i dont see the obvious. i mean we have a huge tilapia problem here.

as for the cold, i heard years ago early 80s there was a power plant or the like in the UK, that had a dam that was filled by the plant and the water was just the right temp. apparently there was a large range of most species living in that eco sys. also i heard pirrana as well, why some one would put them in there is beyond me, a much loved pet ?

sounds suss but in this world i dont put nothing pass anyone.

have you heard of this, purple?

I heard of that. Also in the River Trent which has a whole string of power stations on it.
Bear in mind gibbies and the other big plecs don't really eat algae all that much but are just substrate hoovers, so any other substrate feeders are going to suffer.
