I have 2 snails and 3 catfish want to know how much aquarium salt I should put in my 20 g tank without killing or hurting the snails. I also have 2 comet goldfish and am trying to build their slime layer. I read that 1 teaspoon per 5 gallons is enough. so should I add 5 teaspoons for a 20 gallon, also should I put it in one area or spread it across the whole tank.

comet goldfish do not belong in smaller tanks as the regular goldfish rule does not apply to them. the Koi fish rule applies to them. treat them as Koi and get them into a pond. I do suggest that you return them or re-home them when you get the chance.
1/2 teaspoon of salt per 5 gals is the safest amount. make sure to replace this salt only when changing out water in proportional amounts depending on how much water you changed out...
