In my 30gal I have a mixture of sand, laterite and gravel. About 1" thick and higher in spots where I have planted pots which is towards the back. The other day I was poking around doing some water gardening and noticed that if I pushed my finger into the substrate I would release bubbles of air. Is this good? bad? okay? bacteria doing it's job?

I'd be willing to bet it is air that is still trapped in the substrate from when it was put in - especially if the substrate hasn't been given a vigorous stir. When I had sand in my 55g, it would release bubbles everytime I stirred it up, unless I gave it a good "swoosh" when I put it in.

That's just my guess, however.

Okay. Thanks for the feedback. Just thought it was weird and then recalled that I get these miscellaneous bubbles away from the bubble wands every once in a while. Got to wonder what the horse faced loach thinks of it when he is burrowing and gets blown back by an air bubble. Whoa! :)

yes, i though my plecos were farting when they stirred up the sand, before i saw all the bubbles trapped under the sand(i washed my sand too, so it was wet when i put it in he tank)....but that still doesnt explain where the bubbles come from when there on the side glass:D
