I'm back! And guess what. I have redone a lot of things. First off, gave away half of my fish. Decided to do a loach tank. :) AND! I bought a 35 gallon hex tank to upgrade to for a while! I want to do sand on the bottom instead of gravel. How coarse or fine of sand do I want for a planted tank? I've never had sand before so I am unsure where to start. I know I don't want a powder but not sure where to go from there.

pool filter sand has always been recommended. I am currently trying a dirted 30 gallon with cichlid sand myself. i just recomend staying away from play sand unless you want to clean it for 3 hours and still end up with cloudy water lol. my 20 gallon on the other hand i got from a local stream. it has small grains of sand all the way up to larger rocks the size of half dollars. and all kinds of different rocks from sand stone to granite. crypts are doing pretty good in that so far. thats all i've tried so far though. thinking about maybe trying baby tears or something like that since the water is only about 8 inches deep.

Sounds nice.

Wish I could give away 3-4 of my kids at times, but no one will have them. LOL! Mostly kidding.

I always thought hex tanks were cool. Gotta be a challenge for tops, lighting and plants though because of their height and configuration.

Sorry it's been a while. My father passed away shortly after I posted that thread. :( I have decides to sell the hex since i can't get the hard water build up off of it, plus can't find the lights I want. I would like LED but hoods only come in fluorescent. Hubby agreed to sell the tank and help me find a bigger one. Plus I couldn't reach the bottom of the tank to clean it haha. (Dang me for bein short!!)

Sorry for your loss too...

I got some LED components and gutted out my tank's fluorescent fixture to install an DIY LED setup. maybe you can do the same? I got components from Rapid LED website.
