Sand

Ok i am guessing i just get some from like the HomeDepot? or Lowes? like playground sand or is there a special kind of sand.

This sand will go in my 55 gal Severum tank as its substrate.

you could also look for playground sand at walmart for cheap too, saw some the last time i went to pick up shrimp pellets

Yeah south down is a sand they sell at home depot that lots of people use for african cichlid tanks.

osh (orchard supply hardware) has playground sand cheap, i just got some.

wouldn't the sand get sucked up when you gravel clean? I was thinking about getting a 55g and ading black sand with black gravel. What do you guys think? Oh and what effects on the water does black sand have since its got so much iron in it?

No nothing can penetrate the sand so it all stays on or near the top making it easy to hover the vacum over the sand and clean it

Clean the sand really good before you put it in. Rinse it very very good. and i am not sure about the iron.

okay thanks, I have another queation - is it better to buy sand or get it from the beach? I live close to a black sand beach so it would be good if I could use that. If I cant why? And if i can use it how should i go about getting rid of the salt? Should I just boil it like you do driftwood?
